Kentucky Mandolin Company

The Kentucky Mandolin Company is based in San Francisco, CA. Through the years, the mandolins themselves have been made in Japan, Korea and most recently (since 2001), China. The latest versions are some of the best ever.

The Kentucky Mandolin company is owned by Saga Musical Instruments. They make several popular brands of instruments including Blueridge Guitars, Cremona Violins, Regal Dobros, Gold Star Banjos, Trinity College Mandolins and a host of others. Saga has always put tremendous effort into maintaining time honored designs and the tradition shows in Kentucky Mandolins.

In 2012, the Kentucky Mandolin Company setup their own hand-carved workshop in China. They kicked off with the Kentucky KM-150 mandolin and then slowly migrated the majority of the line to the new shop. The jump in quality is readily apparent.

Folkmusician is honored to work closely with the Kentucky Mandolin Company. We have now been a top Kentucky Dealer for nearly two decades. During this time a lot has changed, but one thing hasn’t. Kentucky is still a market leader in mandolins, by both sales and quality.

Hello Clive,

Since the ‘80s the KM-1000 models have been made in Japan, Korea, and China. There have been a lot of changes in that time. Especially when they changed locations at which point the makers would entirely change. While all the KM-1000 mandolins are nice, versions from different eras only have very basic specs in common. Aside from that, they are not the same mandolins. I can’t tell you a whole lot about your specific mandolin other than, the KM-1000 is a great instrument. :)

I have a Kentucky KM1000 number 20010638 made in Korea, it has a greek urn inlay on the head stock, all of the other mandolins I have seen have a flower pot inlay, can you tell me anymore information about this mandolin, as to why the different inlay, who made it etc.
Best Regards Clive

I am fixing a mandolin and need a tail piece. Do you have a parts department I may get in touch with?

The main reason you are going to buy an Ovation mandolin is obviously the pickup. If not it should be. These are not the best sounding acoustic mandolin made, but on stage they are in their element. Need to add some mandolin to your high-volume rock band?
