Kentucky Mandolins with radiused fingerboard

March 25, 2016

What is the difference between the Kentucky 171 and 174 mandolins and do either one of them feature a radiused fingerboard. Also what Kentucky A style mandolins feature the radiused fretboard and do they come with a case or bag? Thanks, Joe

 Hello Joe,

The KM-171 (black), KM-172 (honey), and KM-174 (amber) are all identical with the exception of the color. These are very nice mandolins for the money.  The 170 series have a flat fingerboard. The Kentucky mandolins in A-style that do have a radiused fingerboard are the KM-250, KM-254 (again identical with the exception of the color), and the KM-505.  For an Oval hole mandolin, the new Kentucky KM-270 series has radiused fingerboards. When this new series first went into production, there were a few with flat boards. This would have been around 2015. Anything you are buying now, should have a radiused board.

The main reason you are going to buy an Ovation mandolin is obviously the pickup. If not it should be. These are not the best sounding acoustic mandolin made, but on stage they are in their element. Need to add some mandolin to your high-volume rock band?
