This mandolin has proved hard to keep in stock. Very few are made and we usually have a waiting list for them. If it is not in stock you can place your order and get a spot in line. We will not charge you until your mandolin is ready to go.
This model with the Dragonfly inlay will only be offered for 24 months and then it is retired. The centerpiece of the Dragonfly models is the unique vine inlay design carefully inlaid into the fingerboard. The inlay made from real pearl and abalone gives this mandolin a truly custom look. The Flame has one of our most in demand mandolin features, a radiused fingerboard. The radiused board is comfortable to play and many players feel that it improves their performance. The back of this fine new model also features a figured maple. Flame maple is also used on the neck and sides.
The pickup is a genuine Fishman system with an active preamp.

The Pickup
Mandolins are being used in more different styles of music and venues. For years players have been seeking a way to add a pickup to their mandolin. While many options exist, most are cumbersome and sound thin. Michael Kelly teamed with Fishman Electronics, a company considered the leader in acoustic instrument amplification to develop a new and improved solution. This new system is fully integrated into the mandolin during production. No fragile external pieces, each mandolin is built for this application. The Fishman pickup is mounted inside of a special bridge. The system includes a side mounted active EQ. This allows users to easily adjust treble, bass and volume right on their instrument. The fully integrated MK design assures great amplified tone, durability and adjustability. Each mandolin also provides the great MK tone acoustically that Michael Kelly users are accustomed to.
Additional work performed in the Folkmusician shop:
Truss rod is adjusted.
Fretboard is leveled so that the string height may be lowered without buzzing.
Nut is filed to lower the string height and insure the strings fit correctly (very important).
Bridge work is done as needed to assure proper string height and eliminate buzzing.
Bridge is positioned so that the mandolin has proper intonation and plays in tune.
String grooves are properly fit to the string and lubricated with graphite to eliminate buzz and reduce string breakage.
Tailpiece receives work (as needed), to prevent buzzing.
Tuners are lubricated to help them turn smoothly.
Instrument is tuned and played before making any final adjustments.
These steps take up a great deal of time and require the mandolin to be restrung and tested multiple times while the work is being performed.
This is what sets our mandolins apart from those purchased from elsewhere. Even though the mandolin may be the same model, our version will have an improvement in playability and tone.
This is often the difference between a virtually unplayable instrument and a mandolin that is a joy to own.
